Pros: DivX, USB 2.0, HDMI, Quick Read, Power Resume, Neat Black Finishing Cons: No XVid QPEL or WMV Support, Does not read Portable HDDThe LG DV388 comes across as a good value for money media player. While it supports all the common formats such as DivX, MP3, WMA, JPEG etc.
its decent enough to handle the most used movie/media formats. However I did not like the Menu as well as the navigation on the remote controller. Took me a while to figure out how to switch between the DVD and USB function. I think Philips does a better job in this but its kind of pricey as compared to LG. The Philips model DV5996 is the only one which could be compared to LG388 and even the store managers were not fully aware of the complete set of features. Later on I realized - that the only possible difference between Philips DV5996 and LG DV388 is that Phillips supports portable HDD which might come in handy.
However the price difference between the two was massive and did not justify the added feature - LG DV388 costed me INR 3690/- while Phillips DV5996 was being quoted @ INR 4990/-The USB access time was snappy and did not have any hiccups - however you do need to get used to the menu navigation a bit. The HDMI upscaling was impressive though you would need to buy an HDMI cable separately.
All common movie formats played fine and I did not face any issues as such. Phillips does offer inbuilt equalizer settings however LG did not offer any such feature. This wont bite much considering you would normally be using a 5.1 external audio amp system.Overall a good buy and value for money...
