Good, but not satisfied

Life Expectancy is a novel by Dean Koontz. I was given this book by a friend of mine who recommended Dean Koontz to me. He told me that the author writes horror / spooky stories and is being worth read. This being the first book that I was reading from the author, I was starting the book without a predefined mindset about the author.

Story Plot

The story is about a man, whose grand father had predicted 5 dates on which the hero of the story was to face the worst days of his life. How does this man and his family approaches those 5 days, and how he negotiates those days form the meat of the story.

Pros

The sub plot of the story are good and worth reading. The reader is always in anticipation of what would happen on the next predicted date. The characterization of the characters of the story is nicely done. The people involved and their behavior in the story seems to life like and common to find in every day life. The narration style of the story is different and the author plays the role of the main protagonist while narrating the story.

Cons

Overall a very loose plot. The reader might get bored easily. Once the activities of the predicted dates unfold, the reader gets the feel of being cheated. The build up to each predicted day is great; however it raises the expectations about the plot and fails to deliver on them. Overall, my personal recommendation is that the book is a good time pass, but to be read only if you do not have something better in hand.
