Fine, I saw its preview (or trailer as many call it) just yesterday and I was reminded of the whole movie and I thought of writing one on it.
What more can I say than this…. it’s a flawless masterpiece! My favourite one!
It was originally in Italian, but ‘twas later dubbed in English. It even won 3 Oscars, including Best Foreign Language Film.
The movie, written, directed by and starring Roberto Benigni, is about an Italian man who tries to shield his son Joshua from the horrors of the Holocaust by pretending life in a concentration camp is a game of winning and losing points.
Benigni plays Guido, an almost psychotically happy-go-lucky Italian in the late 1930s who possibly believes life is beautiful. Later he falls in love with Dorah (Nicoletta Braschi, Benignis real-life wife), a pretty local whos engaged to the Fascist town clerk.
Times change, soon they have an adorable son! But days darken (its 1945) and being Jews they are taken to Concentration camp begins. Guido faces this optimistically, takes the deadliest risks ever and ends up with his own death. (Sniff! Sniff!)
Well, many believe that the title does not suit the movie. But I find that too stupid to believe. According to me, it has an underlying meaning, that LIFE IS ADULTERATED with so many things. But that’s what makes it so beautiful…. who wants a dull life?????
