Few movies have the power to move you to strong emotion through comedy. benignis life is beautiful is indeed one of them. to call the movie a comedy would however be unfair to the brilliance of the entire team that brought the movie to us. while most movies of that time, especially the wartime movie genre, evoke sadness and horror, life is beautiful weaves a truly beautiful tapestry of of lifes varied emotions. these emotions, seen through the eyes of a doting father and his innocent young son, come together so powerfully that not too many such movies I have seen, compare with it. anyone who has watched this movie cannot but come away without feeling a lump in his or her throat as young joshua sees his prize tank and rides on it alongside the long line of trundling holocaust victims.
i wasnt surprised when benigni danced on the chairs at the oscars ceremony; I was surprised that this amazing movie didnt win even more!
