Intro
I found most of the MSers being highly philosphic and of a diffrent sect or a cult.
I have seen most of them are ardent fans of the likes of Ayn rand, Richard Bach, Paulo Coelho, Marquez, George Orwell , K Gibra etc...most sophisticated writers with a ratonale in their writings.
But do we all remember those days of Tinkle, Tin Tin, Jungle book, works of Enid Blyton, Tarzan, adventures of Tom Sawyer etc.The adventure, the innocence and all.
Those were the days...dont u agree; days of sheer adventure and the quest for that adventure in our dreams.
For me, this book by Yann Martel brought back those long cherished days of the childhood and the days of reading. This book has no bounds of anything.
It doesnt talk about any philosophy or any religion at all.
Do you believe in GOD?
This is the question that kicks of the story of “Life of Pi”.
This is a story of Pi (Piscine Motor Patel) of Pondicherry, the son of the owner of Pondicherry Zoo Park. The book has only one prime character, and that is Pi himself.
Apart from Pi, there is a Tiger and it’s not wise to disclose any part of the plot, just because of the fact that any revelation will spoil the thrill you experience while you are travel with Pi and get to know his life, which makes this book so appealing.
But just give a short outline or a summary of this book, here is the plot in short.
Pi is the son of a zoo owner, whose family decides to migrate to Canada. In this process they hire a ship which sinks into the ocean. Pi is the lone survivor (human) in this terrible disaster along with three other animals, a tiger, a hyena and a zebra and all of these mange to get into a life boat. Their journey, struggle and the survival of Pi along with the tiger is the major part of the story.
Do they really survive?
Theres no suspense in this. I along with the tiger survive.
What happened to other people and animals on board?
What happened to the Zebra and Hyena?
They might have become the prey of the tigers hunger.Ah! It’s not so obvious.
But why then it left Pi alone?
How a tiger and a human being coexisted on a small life boat for more than 5 months and later how did they survive?
How is this story related to the question about the belief in GOD?
And why some book which is almost like a children adventure classic should get such a wide acclaim and a booker prize?
These are only a few questions that may make you to feel eager to read the book.
Just grab a copy and start reading it. I promise it would be a delight reading this book.
More about the book
These days, I do not know what it is called, trend, style or whatever. I have read three books (Mandala of Sherlock Homes, Bridges of Madison County, Life of PI) in short gap, which are completely unalike in the content but there is one thing in common about these books, it’s the style.
In these three books the authors have presented story of somebody they knew with whom they have conversed about the story and it was just putting down their conversations on the paper and almost all of them contained more than the story.
For example, in life of Pi, the author sneaks in between the story trying to give the real life account of his meeting with Pi. Also in all these books there are those interviews from somebody who is not at all related to the story but some how related to the characters in it.
I do not know whether all things and people are really realistic or it is just another kind of writing technique or style to give a more realistic and practical look to their books. I wonder what they call this style, if at all there is one such style.
Anyways, I do not have any complaints about the style. It’s just perfect; but just an observation.
And finally that is the end of the review...goes see the life of Pi.
