Yan Martel’s writing is astoundingwhile one of the reviews questions the first phase of the book on religion, Ithink its presence is important to the characters evolution into the experienceon the Boat. The way I look at it is that the Tiger is none other thanPi Patel himself, and all the animals are in reality the peoplehe defines (his mother, the French cook…. ) in the end. Yan has veryresourceful used the notion "Ignorance is Bliss" in crafting “Piscine Monitor Patel”, an organically growing mind reasoning the things around him and learning toreflect with the knowledge. "Piscine Monitor Patel" interesting name to a characterwho is being his age and reflecting on his view of the world with impressiveconviction.
First and foremost the authorsdescription of the Zoo from Pi’s perspective is vital for Pi’s narration of thestory with animals in place of the real characters. On the topic ofPi’s religious escapades, Pi’s experience form all religions have a commondenominator: They all say the same thing but can be perceived indifferent forms, which Pi with age and ignorance incorporates it toassociate the animals as the people that were really on the boat, through thewhole narration.
My Reason tounderstand Pi as the Tiger and as himself or rather two contradicting state ofmind he relies on to survive the ordeal: one that is pushing him to live (PiPatel as himself the positive prophecy) and the other that has the power todestroy him (Pi as the tiger as a negative prophecy that he is destined todeath). This theory I suppose would reason why the tiger depended on Pi and lethim live. While the negative prophecy is destroyed or becomes obsolete ordisappears into thin air his when he reaches land, what remains is Pi himselfand the memory of the ordeal. Yan has beautifully scripted this story, and Idon’t think that “My theory may be wrong” but believe that it is a way toreflect on the book!!!
