Music - Therapy for various Psychological Problems

When the Saptaswaras came into existence, little did we know that music had the power to have a great impact on human mind.  This is very little understood by a common man who just sings or listens to keep himself happy and peaceful.  Commonly known as music, it is a gift of the Gandharvas and hence also has a name the Gandharva Vidya.

In fact, last evening I had read Paulose’s review on sleeplessness and he had highlighted very important aspects of the human mind.  While reading the review, I thought I could share some very interesting aspect of music little known by commoners like us.  Great music schools are conducting research on music and slowly developing it into a science that heals human mind and its enigmatic features.  Most of us only think of music as an instrument(whether vocal or instrumental) that just puts one to sleep and often known as Lori in Hindi and Taalaattu in Tamil.

Carnatica.com is one such school which uses various Ragas not only to eradicate sleeplessness, but deals with other aspects of purely psychological problems that torture human minds of today.  In fact, they have a Music Clinic on their website and it was extremely interesting to note the same.

In addition, this school of music regularly conducts Raaganubhava concerts on various classical ragas(Carnatic and Hindustani) where they sing the kritis that fall in under the theme raga and then there are exhaustive discussions on the various aspects of the said raga.  Many participate in the detailed discussions with the experts on the raga available on the site and others who provide vital inputs about the raga.

Sometimes there are mind-boggling questions like – “I come back from office almost dead tired and I don’t want to hear anything, not even anyone talk, I don’t want to listen to the radio or watch TV.  In fact, I don’t even like my people around……….”  Such is the tension one goes through where these kind of concerts provide information on soothing ragas that have quite an impact on the person’s mind, of course when taken to regularly.
