The Little Prince is author Saint-Exuperys most famous work; it is also one of the most successful and best-selling titles in the world. The story in this book is, of a man and the lessons he learns from a wide-eyed innocent. Antoine de Saint-Exupery takes a story from his life, fills it with talking animals and plants, and makes it one of the greatest books of all time. This is a relatively short book, with the key themes of love and friendship, identity and relationship. The books main character, the little prince, journeys to earth from his small planet to learn more about these ideas. There he meets the books narrator, a pilot lost in a desert, to whom he shares stories of his fantastic travels and meetings with colourful characters, including a wise fox and perplexing tipplers. Through the Prince and his tales we learn much about the books, indeed lifes, central themes. We also learn something of the importance of perspective, open and creative thinking, imagination and child-like wonder in a happy and enriching life. However, it is short and sweet enough to read to even very small children, who will undoubtedly fall in love with the books direct style of narration and both memorable and charmingly funny persons and events. Its easy enough to see why: delightful prose, rich imagery and metaphor, beautiful illustrations, simple yet profound that covers a poetic, yearning philosophy which is rather reflections on what are real matters of consequence. Originally written in French, the English translation is nonetheless good and easy to follow. Though now more than sixty years old, the Little Princes ideas remain as powerful today as they were then. Timeless, beautifully illustrated and highly recommended.
