Parliamentary Democracy, our past political stalwarts and statesmen professed and installed for our great country after Independence with sense pride as a benevolent system for large secular population like ours, seems to have come to a cross road.
Neither present Ruling UPA coalition Government (Congress led) at the center nor Opposition NDA (BJP led) have been sensitive to prevailing ills within the country and serious problems major populace are facing. They are all set to settle their scores at huge cost to the exchequer. No body holds responsibility for last Lok Sabha session?s failure to hold meaning debate and discussions on burning issues, rather than raising usual slogans and mass boycott as daily ritual.
Added to this, is the public bickering between UPA and NDA has been every day affair. Recent incident (prior to unilateral Finance Bill passing with entire opposition being absent) voiced by senior opposition leaders against the Prime Minister?s behaviour, as published in media and raised at various forums in TV news has disgraced the sanctity of the highest office. Situations seem to be getting out of control.
Dr. Manmohan Singh is known for his humility and gentlemanship apart from being a top grade financial expert, is not expected to behave the way it has been described in the media, unless he has reached his endurance limit. After all, we are all human beings and extreme pressures and provocations may make somebody to reach his/her threshold point to burst. In his case, it is still more serious. His role of premiership is remotely controlled ( like Balasaheb Thakre professes) by Madam, although each and every Congressman will vehemently protest. But, it is apparent and noticeable through recent deliberate actions of the party to nail the Opposition, that too BJP and Shivsena!
Who has tried to score by opening up the case of Uma Baharati after 12 years and make her a martyr? Who has authorized a senior Congress Minister to remove the plaque of Veer Savarkar with vengence? Who is sheltering so-called ( even well known) political criminals rather goons (who have systematically ruined the state of Bihar) holding central ministerial berths, so called tainted ministers? Does Mrs. Sonia Gandhi has the answer ? Being in the Ruling Party, she, through her party could have created a history by removing tainted ministers in the first place and given right repertoire to NDA coalition. Her so-called sacrifice of premiership has not made any difference as she is enjoying the same privilege of ruling the country the way she wants by targeting selectively the oppositions and keeping the gun on the shoulder of Dr. Singh.
Unless the Ruling Party shows maturity to get above all such political agenda to set a healthy environment for solving country?s critical issues like inflation, unemployment, trucker strikes, persisting suicides among farmers, basic education and health, potable water, flood control and all around infrastructure problem to lift lives of millions and millions of people, I am afraid, Lok Sabha will function the way it did so far for the new government.
The opposition is to be put in place by demonstrating the character and sense of urgency towards welfare of the country, rather than settling personal scores. Of course, the opposition is also not showing the kind of maturity one expects out of them --- they are trying to get political mileage out of poor floor management and governance of UPA coalition in first 100 days.
Indian people are all watching and hence improve before it is too late for State Elections scheduled in couple of months!
