Focus on the govertnment’s lack of preparedness towards the introduction of 27% reservation for OBC. when the supreme court asked for the rationale behind 27% reservation the government was not ready for it and is taking time for its responses which shows its lack of preparedness. The article brings out the fact that the government’s logic behind the reservation might be that supreme court has capped the upper limit for reservation to be 50% and since SC & ST categories reserves 22.5 % hence the rest 27 % goes for OBC and now when the court is looking into the matter the government is referring the mandal commission, national sample survey data and states records.Governments lack of preparedness is also apparent from its decision to invest Rs. 8000 crore towards the damage that the upper caste may suffer from the new policy which was the result of nationwide protest against reservation.Over the years the caste has increasingly become synonymous with class. Yadavs in north and Nadars in the south have benefited largely because of reservation and had become dominant figures in terms of politics and economy and are no more backward any more. Conversely, others who have not some how benefited from reservation continue to languish and are categorises as most backward, creating a hierarchy in the OBC class. Its time to rethink our reservation policy if the government wants to make fruitful use of it.
