It?s seldom that a book had made me cry but The Long Road Home did manage to bring tears to my eyes. Though being fed by heaps of Sidney Sheldon?s nail biting thrillers, I don?t like Daniel Steel?s slow mushy drab plotline. But I will like to recommend the Long Road Home for all the sensitive people out there.
The story opens with little Gabrielle bearing the brunt of her mother?s atrocity. Her dad is not strong enough to stand by her. She tries her best to please her mother but each time fails to meet her standards and becomes the victim of her violence. The child with not a normal childhood grows in solitude and fear. At 9 her mom leaves her at the convent. As she grows up into an attractive girl, father Joey brings hope to her life. But just like her father he too abandons her. So far, always lonely she feels like the girl who nobody loves and the few people who do love her cannot stand by her, as they are cowards. And the story of her survival continues?
Her fight alone against the world that constantly wants to hurt her and take advantage of her is awe-inspiring. She truly defines- survival of the fittest.
