BPL GPRS service is NOT GOOD

BPL Mobile has very good network coverage in overall Bombay and nearby areas. Their customer support is very good and helpfull. This review is intended to focus on BPL’s GPRS service ONLY.

When it comes to GPRS service from BPL MOBILE, its not good at all. To use GPRS you need special handsets and computer cables and I will not recommend you to get involve in all the expensive hassle.

Firstly the GPRS handsets are costly for example Motorola v66 will cost you around 15k-12k and is the only phone I was able to surf successfully with. The cable cost Rs.2200/- and phone’s charging adapter costs whooping Rs.850/- (my adapter gone bad, so I have to get new one after 15 days waiting period) :’(

In the beginning the downlink (download) speed was extremely good and worked well till October 2002 and after that service quality went miserable and pages take ages to download. The uplink speed was always poor (for example to send emails from your email software) due to technological barriers as GPRS technology is quite new.

UPDATE: August 28 2003.

Hi all,

I have found that BPL has recently improved GPRS service (July 2003) and now days its working fine without any problems. I have also tested orange GPRS service on prepaid card and it also works fine but rather slower then BPL GPRS service as in July 2003 but is rather few hundreds bucks cheaper then BPL GPRS service.
