Published in 1954, lotr is the sequel of Tolkien’s 1937 children’s novel THE HOBBIT, and is often regarded as “his legendary fantasy”. That is absolutely true, JRR Tolkien’s work has been regarded as “the book of the century” and even “book of the millennium” by Amazon.com.
Though the book continues with the base of hobbits(half-sized, peace loving and simple minded people), Tolkien has introduced drastic changes in this work. Its quite evident while reading these books(six books in all make the LotR-- divided into 3 volumes) contains adult-themes like betrayal, friendship, courage, love etc. But the book makes an interesting read for 13+ audiences.
Based in the realm of MIDDLE-EARTH, it is a story of a young hobbit named Frodo Baggins, who faces an immense task. He has to destroy the evil one ring forged by the dark Lord SAURON, WITHIN SAURON’S REALM. Thus begins an unusual journey in which Frodo is aided by a fellowship of 9 members. In this journey, Frodo encounters with his toughest challenges and confronts his greatest fears.
Besides hobbits, LOTR also includes various races like the mystical ELVES, MEN, Dwarves, ents and the evil ORCS.
The writer JRR Tolkien has also devised the Elvish language(which is of 2 different dialects), for the ELVES the wisest of all creatures in Middle-earth.
The other important characters include Sam (his best friend), Gandalf(his mentor), Aragorn (a king in exile) as also Eowyn, Legolas, Merry, Pippin, Faramir, Theoden, Gimli, Galadriel, Treebeard etc.
Explaining the whole plot of the book would turn into a spoiler. The movie directed by Peter Jackson is just magnificient though its not as good as the book itself.
This scholarly work of Tolkien will always remain a best-seller throughout the ages. I don’t find this book boring, though many have claimed it be.
Ok then,
Namarie, (that’s Elvish for good bye!!)
p.s- few other books of Tolkien related to middle-earth are The Silmarillion, the hobbit, Unfinished tales about which I will be writing soon.
