Cherish your love

Love changes everything

Now I tremble at your name

Nothing in the world will ever be the same

Love changes everything

Days are longer, words mean more

Love changes everything

Pain is deeper than before

Off into the world we go

Planning futures, shaping years

Love comes in and suddenly all our wisdom disappears

Love makes fools of everyone

All the rules we made are broken

Yes love changes everyone

Live or perish in its flame

Love will never let you be the same

No one has been able to define love – so I am not going to even try to do so. Yet, I am hopelessly sentimental and I do believe in the concept of ‘soul mates’ – I do think that there is someone special for each of us . However, it is not necessary that we will definitely find that person and settle down with ‘The End’ flashing on our smiling faces.

It may be someone we have never met and maybe will never meet in this short lifetime.

It may be someone you may meet at the wrong place or wrong time and have to let go.

And it may be that you may meet your soul mate and even get married, live happily for some time and then you may have to part.

I think that the last situation is the most poignant and the most heart-wrenching.

Love Story is the story of two such star-crossed lovers who met, loved and parted. Oliver Barrett, the rich millionaire Harvard boy meets Jennifer Cavilleri, a brilliant young Radcliffe student – and love blooms, despite their cultural and economic differences. What’s interesting is their complementary natures – while Oliver is quiet, sober and very earnest, Jenny is vivacious, full of beans and has a wonderful sense of humor. Right from the moment they meet, they are sure that they cannot like each other even marginally. They are openly insulting and take pot-shots at each other constantly.

However, opposites attract and remain attracted long enough for them to contemplate getting married, struggling against the obstacles and adversities. Just when they feel that they have reached a point where their hard work has paid off, tragedy strikes.

The book is very short in length – just about 127 pages and is written in a simple and lucid manner. For many, this is Erich Segal’s best – In any case, this is the book that established him as one of the best authors of the modern times.

At the end of this one, you may cry ( if you are the sentimental kinds) or you may sit and watch out of the window reflectively (if you are the sentimental kinds and don’t want to acknowledge it).

In any case, I am sure that it will touch you and leave its mark on you forever.

After reading this book, you may feel like cherishing your loved one more – simply because you may realize that our time of togetherness is running out. Because, though love may be immortal but we are mortals and we have some limited moments to love and be loved.
