I first read this book in my graduation days as it was in my syllabus this was the only reason that I had to buy this book. There is a lot of affairs in the book. The plot is somewhat loose in structure. The book portrays a grim side of marriage where women seem very powerful dominating and have an attitude of escaping from their first and foremost duties like taking care of their own child managing household, etc and engaging themselves in different kinds affairs across the city. This is a story of a couple where the wife of a doctor breaks all the vows of marriage and engages herself in affairs with rich aristocratic circle. The wife gets so much engaged in buying rich gifts for all her lovers that ultimately she commits suicide without being able to pay her debts leaving the debts to be payed by her husband. But when her affairs are revealed to her husband, husband dies leaving little daughter with her grandmother. It has a very pathetic end. Other books are much more interesting than this one.Flauberts writing style isnt that impressive.
