Maggie - woh haseen yaadein !!

Once upon a time in India.......

haha hahh..what a great beginning for a great product... almost the Ashutosh style isnt it ?

well, continuing.. ....lived a little girl who was about eight years old. She just hated food in any form. Ran miles away on seeing rice (her limit was of course to the stairs or to the terrace...).

Vegetables made her puke and rotis made her sneeze. The only thing she could tolerate was Bread and Parle G biscuits.

One night, her parents invited home another couple for dinner and she sat with them to eat. Then began the never ending session of screams and yells ’’’’ Noooooo.. I dont want this..... pleeeeeeeease dont put this, cheeeeeee.. take this one away ... or I wont eat... ’’’’’

’’’’’’if you dont want to eat, then leave the place but dont behave like this , in front of guests ’’’’’’’’

This was from the stern dad who wanted to teach the child how to behave.

The frustrated child was almost about to go, when mother came in with a new dish.

A small bowl with soft yellow sticks and some vegetables, smelling yummy. One gulp and the girl knew what she wanted for the rest of her life.

’’’’’’Haan haan.. tumne theek socha... !!! . Usse raat, usse waqt, wo jo Bukhi bachhi thi woh MAIN HI THI aur uske nanhe haathon mein jo cheez di gayi thi.... .woh maggie thi...’’’’’’ lol !!

(translation : that night the girl who sat there was me and the thing she had in her hands was our very own Maggie)

^^* my tryst with Maggie ^^

As days progressed, I often brought home this small packet that had square shaped, dried noodles and a small silver packet of Taste maker.

I wanted only maggie for lunch , breakfast, dinner and snack.

Those days the price of the maggie was 3 rupees and it came in the following flavours :

Masala - I found it too spicy then, hence avoided it

Sweet and Sour - all children ate only that in ads. hence it was my favorite

Capsicum - Not bad, liked it most of the times.

Lasanya - Avoided it as it sounded similar to my name... my friends often teased me saying ’’’’’’yesterday, I ate Lavanya flavour ’’’’’’’’ and made my lilfe miserable at school

Southern Spice - Exact replica of freshly made Sambhar powder, hence avoided it too... as Dad would often say, if you can eat S.S flavour with maggie, then why cant you eat idli-sambhar and dosa-sambhar ???(those days, I avoided it like plague... ) lol

^^* How I was cheated ....... ^^

Whenever I asked for more Maggie, somehow Mom never ran short of it. Infact she stopped insisting that I have rice or vegetables. I would happily eat a whole lot of maggie and goto school, As days went by, I started noticing the quantity of maggie was less and more vegetables were seen on top instead.

I also noticed maggie having drastic sizes. Some would be long and thick, others would be very tiny and thin.... not to mention the satisfied look on mom’s face whenever I ate maggie.

I later discovered that she had been mixing both vegetables and handful of rice with Maggie each time she served and that was the secret of the drastically small looking maggie (which was actually rice).

After a big fight, some scoldings and some tears, we both came to an agreement that she should retain Maggie’s original form and that I should keep my promise and eat other nutritious food.

^^* Me, myself and Maggie later ..... ^^

Since my friend Rekha_breed has already given ample introduction about Maggie and its history, its contents, I am going to skip all that.

Life with Maggie became very interesting later. As I grew up, I started making maggie with lot of veggies after cutting it both short and long , depending on the mood.

Around that time, I also realized that other old flavours of maggie stopped and some new flavours emerged. I think it was Tangy tomato and Curry.

Both were horrible

One was too tangy and one was too spicy.

Also maggie started coming in a small packet and the size of the noodles became different. I guess the consumers hated the new Maggie and after a while, it reverted back to its old size and package.

There were also some other flavours like Maggie-Chinese style and Maggie Chicken.

Those two had an oriental taste and the former also came with a small packet of Soya sauce.

^^* Conclusion^^

Maggie was /is always at the top despite the presence of Top Ramen and other brand of noodles. Its a simple to make dish and very popular with children.

Fast to cook and good to eat

I enjoy eating Maggie even today, its one of my favorite snack or favorite lunch, with or without veggies. But Now I do know that Maggie by itself is not very nutrious and also not very good for health when taken often. It should be taken once in a while , with a whole lot of vegetables. I have not seen anyone so far who dislikes maggie.

I end my review here, hope everyone enjoyed it. if so, quickly go home and make yourself one maggie and revel in the pleasure :)
