Overall a good car, but Service is Bad

I have been driving it for last one and half year and it has done about 27000 kms. Overall performance is satisfactory and no glitch till today. But service is bad. My car is eating the rear tyres and despite best efforts the service engineers are not able to tell the reason till today, forget rectification of the same.

The dealers have upgraded from rural vehicle seller and repairer to car and SUV sellers, but they have not come out of the rugged jeep mentality - Ke Bus Chalni Chahiye. Also I feel the service people are not well trained / experienced.

Car is OK but when it comes to service I repent my decision to buy this car, despite the fact that am myself an Ex Mahindra employee.

Hi,

I bought my Logan 1.6GLX in First week of April 2008. I have driven it around 11000 kms till today. Logan is my third car, Maruti 800 being first and Esteem second. In addition, I have driven Palio and Accent for quite some time. Now I thought I should share my experience with other people -

Mileage - I drive from Delhi to Gurgaon on MG Road daily. It has been giving between 12 - 13 consistently with AC. Which in my opinion is good considering the kind of traffic I drive through daily. (It takes almost 45 mins to cover 6 kms stretch). I have not been on long drive till now, so cant say how much it will give on highway.

Handling - Power steering is hard compare to other cars and some time irritating. Turning is fine. Car is stable on sharp curves at high speed. However, width of the car sometime proves to be a big negative. Car is stable upto 110. I have not driven beyond this speed, so cant say how it behaves above that.

Switch positions - All the switches are on wrong sides of Indians, but I am used to these and now does not make any difference.

Plasticand fabric- It is not good and fitting is not excellent. Covers vibrate and creates irritating sound.

Space and ride quality - These both are excellent and no comments on both are required.

Dealer response and after sales service - Mahindra may claim to be doing best in this world, but they are no where close to Maruti for simply two reasons - Number of service stations and availability of spare parts. (Just for comparison sake - Rubber ring of bonot stays broke and I had to waste 2 hrs to go to service station and get is fitted. It is quite a insignificant part and for a car like Maruti any mechanic sitting on pavement would have fitted the same for Rs. 10/-).

CNG Modal - I got CNG fitted in my car last month. Car has not stablised on CNG till now. It give me around 19 km / kg on CNG. (For comparison, my Esteem used to give 20 Plus in City and 25 Plus on Highways)

Overall -

Before I bought this car, I test drive Dezire also. I did not like the dezire for simple reason that it was never designed as a Sedan and waiting time was too much (3 months). Although from outside especially rear side, Dezire looks more beautiful than Logan. Dezire comes with same engine, what Esteem has been using for long long time. I have driven Esteem for 5 yrs and can say with full confidence that it is much better than Esteem or say Dezire as far as engine, space & ride quality is concerned. But after sale service and resale of Maruti is un-mached and so this score much less on these aspects.

As far as other cars in this category - Ford Icon, Indigo, Accent are concerned. Accent is a good car but modal has become old. Also maintenance is expensive. Please dont expect any thing from me on Icon and Indigo because of their basic engineering, which is really really poor. My cousin had Icon and as per him - even if some one give him Icon free of cost, he would not take it and for same reason he upgraded to Verna instead Fiesta. About Tata vehicle quality - when ever u see a car broken down on road, just see which car it is. Most of the time you will find a Tata car.

So if you are more concerned with after sale service and resale price, go for Dezire, otherwise it is best car in this category. Also look at 1.6 instead 1.4. Price difference is not big, but in long term 200 CC extra capacity make lots of difference on engine life, air-conditioning and mileage.

And crux of all, please don’t expect SX4 or Honda City for sub 5 Lacs price. If you want Honda’s comfort pay for it.
