Here are some tips for maintaining a washing machine(we have an IFB front loading machine - 5 yrs old)
Dont overstuff - the rule of thumb is that you must be able to move about your hand among the stuffed clothes before you shut the door
Must dry the machine thoroughly in sunlight once in at least two weeks
Check the power cord regularly for faults - replace if there are signs of the insulation wearing out
Keep the machine preferably on a movable stand.
Always use well fitting pipes of adequate length to drain the excess water. You wont relish the machine flooding your drawing room accidently just because you used a short pipe which did no go all the way to the sink or bathroom
Discourage small kids from handling the switches
Get it cleaned from inside by a qualified service engineer once in at least two years
Keep rats / mice / cockroaches away. Use sprays liberally.
Hope you find the tips useful
