.: Malaamaal Weekly - A big Let Down :.

So Priyan after his two back to back movies in 2005 “Kyon ki” and “Garam Masala” is back in the 2006 with a comedy movie “Malamal Weekly”.

Well before I went on details of the movie let me make it clear this movie is not comparable to any of his comic movie.” Hera Pheri”, ”Hangama”, ”Hulchul” and “Garam Masala” being exceptionally good movies as situational comedies, but “Malamaal Weekly” is a real disappointment if compared to any of this talented director’s precious flicks.

More on Movie later .First have some glimpse of movie

The Cast...

Ritesh Deshmukh      Kanhaiya

Paresh Rawal         Lilaram

Ompuri           Balwant-Ballu

Shakti Kapoor        Joseph

Reema Sen             Sukhmani

Rajpal Yadav         Baaj Bahdur

Sudha Chandaran      Karamkali

Asrani           Chokheylaal

Arbaaz Khan           Lottery Inspector

Rakhi Sawant         Nautanki Waali

The Story...

Lilaram a lottery seller in a small village, where every one is under debt of Karamkali, one day hear on TV that one of his clients had won a bumper price of Rs 1 crore.Being the only one educated person in whole village; he makes a plan to get that lottery ticket and claim for the price. He invites each lottery ticket buyers to the party. Every one turns up except one person Anthony. He went to search Anthony who is a drunkard and found him dead because of a shock as he has won the first prize. In his pursuit to get the ticket from dead Anthony, he is mistaken by Ballu as murderer of Anthony. But he makes him understand about the whole scenario and make him agree if he will help him they both will share the equal half of the amount.

On the other hand Kanhaiya is in love with Ballu’s daughter Sukhmani. He works for him just for the sake to meet Sukhmani.Baaj Bahdur, brother of Karamkali is also in love with sukhmani, but he is like a goon of the village.

Story progress as more and more people comes to know about the lottery prize and become the share holder in the amount.

My Opinion...

As said earlier this film stands nowhere if compared to other comic ventures of priyadarshan.Despite of a good star cast, this time Priyadarshan fails to create impact. If we take his last comic movie “Garam Masala”, though that movie had a weak screenplay like Malamaal Weekly, but that movie made the audience laugh for full length.

But Malamaal weekly is very week in all departments. Right from screenplay to performances. With so many good actors in the movie but that magic was missing this time.

Some part of movie where the main characters of the movie make rounds with the dead body gives you a feel of old classic “Jaane Bhi Do yaaron”.

And the climax of the movie is same like that of “Hulchul” resulting in unwanted chaos and mix-up.

This movie cannot be categorized as situational comedy. The best example of situational comedy was “Hungama”. That movie had every scene pasteurized in such a manner that nobody can think that if it cannot happen.

The Performances...

If I start describing performance in chronological order of act then the list will look some what like this.

Paresh Rawal He survived in the movie because of maximum footage was given to him and some best dialogue of the movie. Though the comic timing was seriously missing. Look out for his teeth’s in the movie. Giving some brilliant performance in Hera Pheri and Garam Masala, this one was nothing

Om Puri The second most character in the movie with maximum footage.Wont say an awesome performance as script had nothing to give him something to live up, but still whatever was performed by veteran was good. Again the same thing got some good dialogues. See him arguing with Asrani and the scene in the church.

Ritesh Deshmukh. A total waste in the movie. After such a good performance in Bluff master, with such a good comic timing, Ritesh was terribly wasted.

Rajpal Yadav. Also failed to make you burst in laughters.

People won’t like him to seeing such pathetic roles. He has got caliber which he has shown in Bluffmaster, Kya Kool Hai Hum and Masti.

All others are Ok as a very limited scope for them.

Movie has got only one song as a nautanki, with Rakhi Sawant doing the all Oozy things.

So people don’t fuss if you miss this movie. Better watch Taxi No 9211 again.

Have a Great Weekend Ahead.

Till my Next
