Malayala Manorama is one of major newspapers in Kerala and has been in print since 1888. But except for a glorious history, I see this newspaper virtually offers nothing to the reader except the most irrelevant and mediocre of news.
How an intelligent group of people like the keralites have tolerated this obnoxious piece of junk is something that still surprises me. I have never seen them write anything in an unbiased way. They have just one keyword - sensation. Since that does not happen like that every day they concentrate instead of rape, murder, accidents, more or less in that order. They always take pain to give a detailed account of any accident.
The fact that this paper has got one of the largest circulation in India, thanks to the high literacy rates in Kerala, is another surprising factor. It shows the sheer depravity of the people. This paper always support the malayali attitude and has helped making keralites more narrow minded than the rest of india.
Any incident that is even remotely associated with a keralite is printed. There was a news that one malayali policeman in delhi helped arrest some big criminal. This was printed on front page, if I remember right. How ridiculous! Looks like they dont have anything better to print.
Its not that they dont have talented people. But somehow, the end product is real sub-standard.
It is a shame on kerala that this newspaper has (one of the) highest circulation there. We dont subscribe to it at our home, but I get to see it when I go to restaurants et al, here in bangalore. I remotely hope that they will improve the quality of their news, but no, they are hell bent upon remaining mediocre.
It is one of the media anachronisms of our age.
