Ok. Mallorca. Remember one thing. It’s expensive. The Mallorcans want your money but they don’t want you there. Firstly, even though you’ve paid for your accommodation, you’ll still be required to pay 10% Mallorca tax on top of what you’ve already paid. We also had a bad experience with the hire car…. 10% Mallorca tax on picking up, plus, they always try to blag you into another €200 insurance damage waiver, which I’d already paid online at a cost of only £50, so beware of that scam and all the car hire companies do it. I parked the hire car near the hotel, legally, and it got towed away by the Police and they painted a new yellow line where mine, and every other car, had been parked…. Half a day, 2 taxis and €200 later, I got it back. Car parks, public transport etc has 2 price points… one for locals, one for tourists. We stayed in port du Soller, which is beautiful but, for a working class northerner like me, it comes at a price that leaves a nasty taste in my mouth. The meals out were generally overpriced, especially drinks and the quality of the food pretty average really…. And we tried about 8 different places including dinner and tea. The quaint tram service is €9 from port du Soller to Soller is €9 one way - another tourist rip off…. Taxi for 4 people is €10. Fortunately, we cycle so was able to go out on a few rides, cheap Spanish cafe stops and unbelievably, cycling was free on Mallorca roads but I’m sure they’ll be working on a cunning plan to charge tourists for that next!! ….. oh yeah….10% Mallorca tax on bike hire ! So. If you’re relatively wealthy and all these things are of little consideration, then it’s a lovely resort but for blokes with my humble means, it just feels like I’ve been rinsed then drop kicked back to blighty !
