A friend of mine told me about this movie and gave me the DVD. I wasnt too interested in it, as I have never been an ABBA fan...perhaps because at one stage.
I used to hear everyone playing their music all over the place!! A day later, since we (my family and I) had nothing else to do, I put the movie, and since then I have been a Mamma Mia! and ABBA fan!!! In the next week I saw the movie thrice!!
The other reviewer (Cousin2) has outlined the story and given a lot of details. I am not going to try and compete with that. However, what I would like to comment on is its feel good factor. In brief, it is about this girl who is living with her mother in one of the most beautiful and scenic islands I have seen in the movies! Her mother has brought her up single-handedly...
As neither of them is sure who the father of the girl is!! (at this point let me tell you that the girl is absolutely adorable and cute in a sweet kind of way! And her mother?? The absolutely gorgeous Meryl Streep! She is amazing in this movie!) However, to get back to the story...the girl finds her mothers diary in which she mentions three of her boyfriends with whom she had dot-dot-dot (see the movie and youll know what I mean! ;))
The movie begins with the preparations for the girls wedding...and the girl secretly sending an invite to each of these three guys (of whom one is a certain handsome and dashing Pierce Brosnan!). The mother has no clue about this. The three of them arrive and they too are not aware...and as the movie unfolds, each on seeing the girls mother thinks that the girl is his daughter!!! The confusion heads to a climax when somewhere towards the end of the movie, when the wedding ceremony is on and the mother wants the father to give away the bride, all three of them stand up!!!! And then...hey, I am not going to tell you who the father is, and how it ends up! Am not going to spoil the fun for you!! go watch it for yourself!!! A must-watch!
The music is great as always...and has been made even more upbeat. So much so that both my daughters flipped for the movie. My three year old one even cried till I bought our own copy of the DVD!!! Now, whenever she wont do something...I tell her...if you want to watch mamma mia!... and it gets done...! The dancing in it, the characters (particularly the two whacky friends of the mothers!), the picturisation, the music (again!), the locale, the LIFE and the FUN that movie exudes is terrific!! A must-watch! And I would say even a must-own DVD if you are the music loving kind!
