Mani made Pallavi Anu Pallavi (Kannada)- a path breaking movie in 1984. this is a true classic and till today is my fave movie of Mani Ratnam.
The movie also had amazing songs (IlayaRaja), cinematography(Balumahendra) and great performances by Lakshmi and Anil Kapoor.

Just happened to read dreamzunlimited’s review on maunaraagam, and that reminded me of a certain less known trivia - Mani reused several scenes of Pallavi Anu Pallavi in his later movies.
