A different Simbu Altogether!

Silambarasan is well known for his mannerisms than his acting. He wants to create the same magic Rajini Kanth did in yester years. I have not watched any of Simbu’s movies before, but I think his attempts fell flat so far. This time he wanted to do something different from his earlier flicks. Manmathan’s plot is a right choice and will be a good break for him.

Plot:

This movie is a thriller and the storyline is something similar to Sigappu Rojakkal, Alavandhan but with twists. I do not want to reveal the plot here since it will spoil the surprises you enjoy while watching it in the theaters. The plot is good overall, this is a 3 hour movie and it did not feel like it. It was not dragging but there are a few negative points here and there. Usually thrillers will have a gripping screenplay/gruesome scenes but they are missing in the movie. He should have concentrated more on how the killings happening. That would have brought more chillness to the story. Also there are some loopholes which were not addressed properly. And the climax is good but made me think that it ended suddenly.

Cast Performance:

Simbu is the Manmathan. He has tried his best to bring the needed emotions. Comparing Kamal’s performance in movies like sigappu rojakkal, Simbu definitely lacks the smoothness in some frames. But we should give credits for his attempts. The clubber kind of attire and attitude suit him very well. Jothika fills in as his friend/lover. She has done a good job. Gowndamani comes as Simbu’s uncle and a cycle shop owner in some remote village of Coimbatore. His comedy track is not that good. Sathyan who comes as a cop and Santhanam (Sagalai-Ragalai fame) as a friend of Simbu bring some laughter to the audiences. There are other actors/actresses (Salanam girl, Run Villain) but threre is no scope for them to deliver anything.

Background Score:

After IR, YSR has been excelling in the background score dept. At present no other MDs would do BGM as effective as Yuvan. He proves it again in this movie. Though it does not have the same depth as in 7GRC, it was rich and good. There are three bit songs coming in the movie, two are sung by Yuvan and one by Simbu. They are very good and I hope Simbu releases the OST of this movie with these extra songs.

Songs:

Songs are taken very well in the movie. Though the album did not create any magic like 7GRC colony in audio circles, I am sure it will lead the charts and pick up very soon. ’Thaththai Thaththai’ song is just awesome, and this is the first true MTV-style song in Tamil cinema, visuals are just stunning. ’En aassai’ is also well taken, the chereography is very good especially towards the end. ’Manmadhane’, ’kathal vaththen’, ’vanmunna’ are good too. All songs sound awesome with visuals. ’Oh Mahirae’ was left out from the movie, looks like he stocked that song for later release.

Cinematography:

Excellent cinematography work by R D Rajasekar. Every frame is good. No wonder Simbu teams up with him again for his ’thotti jaya’. He is another talented cinematographer around in tamil film world today. I read on the web that this movie is the first full length tamil movie used Digital Image, so watch it in theaters to enjoy it maximum.

Verdict:

A good entertainer with rich visuals, decent plot and screenplay. Apart from the lead role, Simbu has quite involved in the whole movie making as a director, singer and additional rhythm programmer. It is evident that he worked hard in the making and I think he has passed his first test. This is the best movie released for this Deepavali!
