Review of Mansfield Park

Being a huge fan of Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice I thought I should give Mansfield Park a go. I was honestly expecting a story line more or less along the same lines of those two as Mansfield was published right after them. But I was wrong. The beginning failed to capture me mainly because of detailed outline of the Bertrams family history.

The rest of the book is nothing to comment on. When the heroine of the book is being overshadowed by five or six other characters throughout most of the book, its not very fun nor very interesting to read. One of the things that I loved about Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice was how Elinor and Elizabeth excelled and shone throughout the books how they handle the various situations. Also their love lives were quite interesting to read about.

Fanny doesn’t experience these situations as she doesn’t ’’come out’’ until after Maria’s wedding when we see her at the centre of attention (mainly because of Henry Crawford). Jane Austen’s writing style in Mansfield Park isn’t too different from all her other books but I’m sorry to say that the plot is very weak and it’s definitely not her best book.
