Mardaani 2 - Hard Hitting & Thought Provoking

It's a very long time that I wrote a review on MS. Just watched Mardaani 2 on Amazon Prime. If bollywood has Singham, one can proudly say that there is Shivani Shivaji Roy as Mardaani.

The movie picks up from where it had left off in its first installment, Mardaani 2 shows Rani Mukerji’s famed character, Shivani Shivaji Roy, superintendent of police transferred to Kota from Mumbai to catch a phsyco rapist. She takes on serial rapist and murderer Sunny played by Vishal Jethwa, his victims are women who speak up & fight back. Sunny keeps commiting the most heinous of crime, he doesn’t just rape, but brutally murders them. Rest of the movie is all about the cat and mouse game of a police officer after a criminal where one wants to outdo the other.

Debutant Director, Gopi Puthran, writer of Mardaani weaves a gripping tale and he doesn't loosen the grip through and highlights what women face when they decide to step out to take their space in the world.

Rani Mukerji, one of the finest and versatile actress is as ferocious as she was in the first part of this film and she rightly shoulders up the responsibility of no nonsense cop drama. She has given her heart and soul to the character of Shivani Shivaji Roy.

The debutant Vishal Jethwa has given a stupendous performance. His expressions, body language and demeanour is spine chilling. The entire film is shouldered on these two, and while other characters are made available for support, the supporting actors are hardly given the scope to do anything more.

The film is fast-paced, there are no songs. Editing adds crispiness to the pace. The movie throws light on the current burning subject of brutal crime against women and also exposes general mentality of Indian males who still feel women are not equal to them. Also raises awareness of issues on the safety of women.

Overall Mardaani 2, despite being predictable is hard hitting, thought provoking and satisfying. Let's hope Shivani will return for Mardaani 3 with a more layered script.
