Bought this car in 2005 to replace a really bad looking Special edition Riviera Red M800.
Being a student, I really can’t afford a high priced car nor can I pay too much for Petrol. So the choices were obvious- another 800 or the Alto.
The Alto was a big upgrade from the 800, as it offered the same fuel economy, better interiors, better driving performance and more space at only a slightly higher price.
Can’t argue with Maruti’s excellent dealer and service network, which the other brands can only look upto as of now.
It’s done 35000 kms and been through hell in terms of the quality of roads here in Srinagar. I don’t remember having taken it to the service centre for a "problem" in the last 3 years. It still gives a mileage of 16-17 in the city and never gives any reason to complain. Simply superb. My parents have owned several other cars including Wagon R, Santro and a few 800’s over the years, but I find no match overall for the Alto. Lacks a bit in pickup, but hey, its neither a racing car nor an SUV. Its an economical city car and thats what it does to perfection- drive you around in the city with comfort at a small price. Its simple economics that any idiot would agree with.
