The new minivan to be launched by Suzuki(APV) would try to do for maruti what Versa failed miserably doing. Create a niche for itself in the MUV segment . This would well be Marutis best People Carrier ( And from the looks of it ...that would just be it..:-( ). Sadly so.
The model has not been launched in India but was on display at the Jakarta motor show. I would put ina few details gathered from websites for info...
1) The so defined people carrier
Well looks extremely spacious with seating for 8 people. Although it does not exactly fall in the category of MUVs, it would be big enough to compete with current models like Chevrolet Tavera and Mahindra Scorpio. Not as impressive as the Toyota Innova from the looks(But then we would be asking for bit too much there..). Looks like a much more refined Versa being Half a meter longer and 18 cm wider than. Looks something more of an VAN than a MUV from the first look( so does Versa..)
2) Engine.
The 1.3-litre engine from the Versa/Esteem and the 1.6 from the Baleno are likely to be the sources of power. But its the new 1.3-litre Fiat Multi-jet diesel, the one Maruti will make in its own plant, that could to be the star performer.
3) Rest.
The front suspension is the familiar MacPherson strut and coil spring layout, while the rear suspension consists of basic leaf springs on a rigid axle, meaning ride at the rear is likely to be compromised.
Brakes are discs in front and drums at the rear, and steering is by rack-and-pinion. Ride height is a bad-road-friendly 175mm, almost identical to the Scorpio and Qualis, and this will prove to be a boon on our potholed roads, even when loaded to the maximum.
4) Price: Must be around 6-8 lakh according to the mags..
Lets wait and watch ...The APV would join the mostly awaited Swift as the latest Maruti offerings but would probably not be able to turn the scales for Maruti that
Swift promises to..
