Maruti Omni - Small Utility Car

Maruti Omni is a versatile car. I like to call it a mini utility car.

It is now available in four variants – 5 seater, 8 seater, 5 seater XL and 8 seater Omni EXL

Dimensions – 3370 (L) x 1410 (W) x 1640 (H) all in mm.

Ground clearance – 165 mm

Turning radius – 4.1 m

Weight – 740 kg

Engine – 4 stroke cycle, water cooled, 3 cylinders, 796 cc

Power transmission – Manual, 4 forward, (all synchromesh), 1 reverse

Break system (both front and rear) – DRUM

Fuel tank – 36 liters

Performance –

Maxm. Power – 37 bhp @ 5000 rpm

Maxm. Torque – 6.32 kgm @ 3000 rpm

Like all other cars it has certain advantages and some disadvantages.

PROS.

  1. A low cost car, so it is affordable by many. Some one can have a Maruti Omni as a second car.

  2. Small cars always have advantage in cities especially on a narrow lane and at parking area.

  3. It is very convenient to move a bulky household. It is not a problem to carry kids cycle for repairing or a good cabinet for the computer. One need not hire something else for such thing.

  4. Not very fuel-efficient but it is okay - 13/14 kmpl.

  5. Can carry 8-9 persons (two families) and some luggage to nearby picnic spot.

  6. Spare parts and service stations are easily available.

  7. One can rearrange back seats. Front seats are adjustable and may recline as per your need.

CONS.

  1. Road Safety is a big issue. No protection at the front. One has to be very careful especially on the highway. One must be in a position to take care of even others mistake. Do not drive very fast and keep the vehicle mechanically fit.

  2. AC is not efficient because of its big cabin and small engine. It is better not to fit AC in this car.

  3. Small wheels like all other small cars are a disadvantage on a bad road.

  4. Long drive is not very comfortable because of its seat.

Safety Tips –

  1. Never convert it to gas. It is risky. Its a single cabin car and gas cylinder will be inside the cabin. Smokers like me may face serious problem. In case of an accident LPG may create too much of problem.

  2. Always tie heavy luggage including spare wheel if these are inside the cabin. In case of an accident these heavy objects may hurt someone and that may be the only cause of death.

  3. Always engage a sensible driver. Rush driving may lead to fatal accident.

  4. Do not forget to get the car checked by authorized / competent person.

  5. Always discourage driving after consuming even a peg (or a bottle of beer) of Hard drink.

Good for short distance trips and a useful city car if you can manage without AC.
