Maruti had an opportunity to make this a great platform but their hapless marketing team has messed up the product. The DZire has two amazing engines, with the practical if not beautiful body. However the top of the line ZDi and ZXi models are practically not available at any dealer - they warn you away from these variants by suggesting a 6 month wait period. The VDi and VXi models are available at a more reasonable wait of 2 months, but do not have some key features for driver ergonomics, which would have made this attractive to a much larger market. Only the ZXi/ZDi models have ABS, Airbags and more crucially the seat height adjustment and steering wheel tilt adjustments.
Consequently, the driving ergonomics in the VXi/VDi models are much worse than the top of the line DZire models. The lack of these adjustments rule out the VXi/VDi for taller or shorter drivers. Maruti is probably minimizing the production of the ZDi and ZXi models, since it makes a much larger profit margin on VXi/VDi models than on the ZXi/ZDi models, due to savings on the expensive Airbags and the ABS systems (These probably cost more than the price difference of about Rs 1 Lakh).
However the cost of tilt steering wheel and height adjustable seats should not be substantial and should be candidates for inclusion in the VXi and VDi models.
