WagonR is a good model from the Maruti stable. The Primea version is a limited edition with some good add-ons.
The first thing you notice is its profile. Very different from the basic WR model. They also throw in the foglamp, alloy-wheels, AC, MP3-player and body-colored bumpers giving it a toned look. Although not as snazzy as the SWIFT (and not as expensive!) WR is the high-end car for salaried employees. Basically you get almost all the features of WagonR high-end model (minus ABS and airbags) for about 60K cheaper.
I spent considerable time comparing it with Hyundai, so finally the add-ons & good service clinched the deal.
The biggest differentiator from Hyundai group is the superb after-sales service that I am receiving now. The cost of spare parts are very low, so when you drive in the goat-infested roads of our country, you will not have to worry about that odd scratch/dent.
Driving experience is quite ok. 1000cc does give you that oomph for quick decision making. When I say quite ok, it means that one shouldnt compare it with Skoda or Toyota. Ride is very silent and sometimes you cannot hear the engine. There were many times when I turned the keys to start a running engine!
Now to the low-downs. I hear from various Maruti owners about the superb mileage (and petrol khatam nahi hota ad), but I dont think the mileage is that good. I am getting around 10Kpl in the city. Partly attributed to the new engine but I dont think it is going to jump another 5Kpl soon. So either people are stretching the truth or I have a fuel guzzling engine.
To give credit to the motor, we have really bad roads in Bangalore which plays havoc with the suspension. I would love to drive this beauty on a smooth road.
Now getting on to the 1000cc engines. This is not enough for the average well-fed family. I notice a distinct drag when the car is fully occupied, so things that you normally do in 3rd gear needs 2nd gear. However I use the car only for the office trips so fits my bill.
So finally, those who are looking for a good 1000cc car with smart boot space, driving comfort and sub-5lac budget, go for WagonR.
Update as on 10-APR-2005
Its been six months already and the car is doing fine. Mileage has improved to approx 12 kpl in city with AC. Performance and pickup remains the same. Awaiting my second service to iron out some odd noise from the AC belt and brakepads. Mostly caused due to a very dusty city (Yes Bangalore is a dust city now)
