Review : I have a Zen for over 4 years now. Lx model. I bought the Zen after a second hand Maruti 800. I have been loving the Car experience. Since then... well almost upto now. Now I am planning to graduate to the next level so here is the ode to this Car from my side.
Overall a great car especially if you are moving to this 993 cc engine after a lower version of vehicle. Great pick up. Although Maruti vehicles are not considered very safe I have no complaints on this. I think Maruti Zen overall is (Was) one of the best looking vehicles in this segment. Although I am not very crazy about the new Maruti Zen look. Frankly the designer murdered everything the Vehicle had it going for it. And turned into an ugly duckling. I had the option of going for a Wagon R but instead becos of the looks I went for a Zen I am happy. I have the moonbeam silver color. One of the first few of this color but I guess it has become very popular now.
The pros:: Good pickup, Good looks, Good interiors and comfortable vehicle. Time tested vehicle. Excellent service avenues. Excellent driving feel. Any mechanic can repair your car, its a Maruti. But I would recommend definitely a good showroom/service station.
If you love your car. It is safe since it has reinforced body and side support beams. The car is very sturdy on grips the road well. Highway driving speed upto 120, one would not feel it. It feels very balanced. Sexy exteriors and comfy interiors what else do you need. And add on top the low maintenance cost.
The cons:: Its low for starters, the Lx version is very tough to handle since it doesnt have a power steering. Zen is a car with one of the largest turning radius. It makes U turns or complex negotiations really challenging. If you are into body building it will help you build your biceps. I would recommend that you go for power steering if you go for Zen. I faced a severe problem with the braking system. It may be a one off issues but the Master cylinder and booster died out in the 2nd year itself that was an expensive replacement of the entire system.
I still continue to be unhappy with the braking system in general with a Zen. Except this it has been a low maintenance vehicle. Especially after I have driven Santro and the erstwhile Matiz... The space near the steering wheel is uncomfortable. If you are fat or too tall. You might want sit and see before buying the car. It is a rich mans basic car and a poor mans luxury car. It does not come equipped with power windows or power steering. But if you are looking at that price range it is a good bet. If looks dont matter to you.
Look at Santro or Wagon R. But for me the Art of Zen really worked well. I am proud to have driven it. Four years on and I still love the car.
