I remember watching this movie when I was only 8 or 9 years. I forgot the story completely, but the name of the movie remained etched in my mind. So, recently I found this movie online and promptly downloaded it.
Mary Poppins was, is and always will remain one of Disney’s all time classics. This is a story that combines animation and real motion movie in one, much before “Who framed Roger Rabbit” came around (a movie that had animated character and motion picture combined into one)
Cast:
Mary Poppins Julie Andrews
Bert Dick Van Dyke
Mr. Banks David Tomlinson
Mrs. Banks Glynis Johns
Michael Banks Matthew Garber
Jane Banks Karen Dotrice
Set in the early 1920s’, the movie revolves around the life of the Banks family. Mr. Banks is a strict father and believes that discipline is the key to life. It is this need for discipline that makes him appoint a nanny for his naughty children (That is not new).
Each time a nanny is appointed, the children manage to drive her away. An angry father then decides to appoint a nanny himself instead of leaving it to his wife.
Here is where the fun begins….
The children want to help their father and write out an advertisement for a nanny which their father promptly tears and throws in the fireplace. But these pieces of paper fly on its own and makes its way to Mary Poppins who lands (literally, she flies you see) at the Banks residence. The other nannies who have responded are blown away (literally).
Then there is Bert, a man who changes what he does for a living everyday. One day he is a singer, the next day he is a painter, the next a chimney cleaner. You can never catch him without him singing his favorite song “Chim Chim Chimney Cheree”, a blockbuster at that time.
Mary Poppins together with Bert, take the children on a magical journey of fantasies and places where the children never dreamed of going. And along the way Mary Poppins manages to change the heart of Mr. Banks, into making him more considerate and caring towards his children and spend some time with them. Because, that’s what children want, time with their parents.
This movie combines music, song and dance in a very beautiful way.
The best songs of this movie include, “Chim Chim Chimney Cheree”, “Spoonful of sugar”, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” (phew)…..
This movie was nominated for 13 Academy Awards, and bagged 5 Oscar Awards. This included Best Editing, Best Music, Best Song, Best Special Effects and Best Actress.
All and all, a movie recommended for everyone to see…………
