Matheran is a beautiful respite from the noise, pollution, and crowds of Mumbai. Highly recommend Louisa’s Point -- you’ll feel like you’re flying. We took a taxi up and a train down, which gives the best of both worlds. The taxi is fast and exhilarating, but not for the faint of heart. The train offers spectacular views, but it takes more than two hours. All in all, a magical getaway within easy reach of Mumbai. One caution though: Choose your accommodations carefully. In particular, the Usha Ascot Hotel is a serious rip-off. It claims to be a European-style hotel, but it falls far short of that standard. Facilities and client service are atrocious.
