Matheran :Land of the walks

Located 80 kms away from Mumbai , Matheran proves to be the most ideal weekend getaway destination for city dwellers . Matheran happens to be India’s only pedestal hill station and this highly adds to the beauty of the place . All vehicles are to be left 2 kms away and this makes it a pollution free zone . Hikers also have a lot in store for them , the Karzat -Matheran and Neral - Matheran are very famous trek trails . A toy train ( narrow gauge ) operates to and fro from Neral upto Matheran 4 times a day and the ride to the top is adventurous and exhilarating . Those fond of driving can test their skills on this extremely steep and narrow road to the top ( drivers are available at the base of the ghat ) as this happens to be one of the toughest roads to drive on in Maharashtra. Accomodation facilities are very good here suiting every kind of pocket , also there is a Mtdc hotel here . For travelling within Matheran one can opt out for horseback or a handpulled rickshaw or simply enjoy walking around . Best time to visit is from Nov - June ( the off-season starts in monsoon when Matheran experiences torrential rains ) . Louisa’s point , Lord’s point , Charlotte Lake, Sunset point , Bazaar are some of the popular places to be visited here . Matheran also hosts equistrian games once a year . A two day stay is enough to experience the old world charm of this place . Matheran is definitely the place to visit.
