A nice trek up

Matheran, a 2 hour drive from Mumbai is a wonderful place to spend a weekend. I travelled with my family to matheran. We drove there.

To get to Matheran from Mumbai, one must first get to Vashi and from there go to the old Mumbai - Pune highway. Following the boards along the way, will get one to Matheran without any trouble. The road to get there is pretty empty, so expect to make good time while getting there.

On the way up, to get to within 2 kms. of matheran (where the cars are suppossed to park) the road gets a bit dangerous. Its more or less the width of one and a half vehicles so one must be careful while driving there. Once you are at the car parking, you are 2 kms. from matheran market. It’s a wonderful climb up, either along the train tracks or on the road (one has the option of taking a toy train to reach matheran).

There are quite a few sights to see there, so a night trip would be feasable. One can go to khandala point, echo point, sunset/sunrise point, see ’’lions head’’. If one is interested in going up without the 2km walk, one can even ride a horse to reach there. Horse’s cost Rs. 25-50 per person (depending on where one takes the horse from). One very please thing to see was the public conveniences. They are well maintained. A good visit for a day + night. I went during December.
