Losing its charm

Once a preferred weekend gateway for people of Mumbai, this place is slowly losing its charm. I visited Matheran place during Holi weekend in March. Nearest station to Matheran is Neral from where either you can catch a train or take a cab to reach to the top. Once in Matheran, you have to either hire a horse or walk. Horse hirers charge a fortune to the travellers in Matheran.

The tour guides will offer you to show different points in Matheran but not all the points are worth going and you will repent spending so much for hire of horse. Hotels in Matheran are all old properties which are old and most of the times not well maintained, yet they charge much higher than what they deserve. Since, there no solid roads in Matheran, there is always dust in the air and the roads are most of the times dirty with horse dung. With very limited options to eat and dine and lack of easy transportation facility, Matheran is a place I would rather avoid and go somewhere else to relax and have peace.
