Mathrubhumi is the second most circulated Malayalam newspaper in Kerala. Managed by Former Union Minister and socialist M .P. Veerendra Kumar n family.
Mathrubhumi had done an important role in the Indian Independent movement, many social reformations and supporting and promoting young writer. Many of the Malayalam writers were grownup through Mathrubhumi and its other publications.
About the newspaper. It gives political and national news in MD veerendra Kumar’s views and interests. He was with the leftists for a long time and the political news were biased or supporting the lefttists. Now Mr. Veerendra kumar has left the Leftists and joined with the congress. So the news are completely biased against the comrades and leftist movement. Of-late they are in real war with some left leaders and is washing dirty linen in public. Not even a single common man in kerala would love to read such nonsense in their morning newspaper. Obviously people are slowly moving towards MALAYALA MANORAMA - owned by Business oriented MRF family.
Mathrubhumi has many editions and gives good coverage of local news. Always they send some reporters to all major sport events like olympics, world cup, but their sports news are below average compared to other malayalam news papers.
They publish science and technology news and world news as important items. Also gives some really good write ups in the weekend editions. Their website is an average one. We will have to digg for news between the Ads.
One really bad thing is their tendency to make anybody a MALAYALI. In anything and everything they will find some malayali connection. Anil Kumble, Ajay Jadeja, American president’s barber, the guy who fills fuel in NASA’s space rockets are all malayalis as per Mathrubhumi. Also they will publish absolute nonsense interviews from such people. Many times the news will be like
" WTC blown up- 2000 dead. A malayali got minor injury in his left thumb" or "meet the malayali who supplied free water to the rescue people at WTC site"
for many years middle class keralities considered seeing/reading Mathrubhumi the first thing in the morning as " AISHWARYAM". But all these are slowly fading away and people are turning their face against it.
I started reading mathrubhumi when I was a kid, but for last three years I have not bought it for my hard earned money. It is worth it. I check their website for obituary column ( that’s the only thing that comes as it is with out any masalas and bias) and headings.
So the final word is its has become just another PAPER. Much much poor compared to the MALAYALA MANORAMA.
