Good picnic spot

The mattupetty dam and lake are important way points in a trip to munnar. The dam is a part of the pallivasal hydoelectric forest. The major attraction is the lake and one side of the lake which is grasslands and can act as good picnic spot.it offers good view of the surrounding hills and view of susnet from here is awe inspiring. There is also boating in the river.

Due to its multifaceted attraction mattupetty has become really popular, the roads leading upto the dam from both sides is crowded with street vendors, the road across the dam is part of the main road, also there is always a huge rush of people at this place and lot of littering and this could prove irritating to many and a hindrance to enjoy the beauty of munnar.

Nevertheless even with this huge rush the view from the banks of the river is really enjoyable, if lucky one can spot elephants on the opposite bank. the best time to visit will be in the evening when one can spend some time in the cool in the banks of the river and return after viewing the sunset, the beauty of sun setting between the hills is beyond words.

A major attraction near this place is the Mattupetty Indo Swiss farm, where a large number of high yielding cattle are kept. There are different varieties of cattle and is primarily a research institute, it was set up by the government of Switzerland and is currently run by the Kerala Livestock Development Board. The view of the cattle grazing on the open grasslands of munnar will be  a new experience and give a feel of the grasslands of Switzerland. Mattupetty was initially famous as cattle location before the lake became famous. Entry ticket cost around 5 rupee and there is restriction on entry times. Entry is only from 9-11 am and   2-3.30 pm. The site is only 3km from the dam. The anamudi peak is also very close by.

Mattupetty is located 13km from munnar town and there is direct access by road. It is definite visit on a trip to munnar.
