I Wasn't Born With It!

Maybelline’s first mascara was introduced in 1917. It was a cake mascara. Now the company is the best seller of cosmetics in the USA. It was launched here in the UK in 1938. Although not the number 1 cosmetic manufacturer here, it is the fastest growing seller. It was created by a chemist, T.L Williams, in 1913, for his sister, Mabel, who desperately wanted to win over her man. He blended Vaseline jelly and coal dust - the first ever lash darkener. It worked. She won her man and married him in 1914.

T.L Williams founded the company Maybelline in 1915, naming it after his sister and the Vaselline used to make that first lash darkener.

Since then, the company introduced eyeliners, water proof mascara’s, foundation, lip and nail lines. The jingle ‘Maybe She’s Born With It. Maybe It’s Maybelline’ was introduced in 1991 and has stayed with the company ever since.

In 1996 L’Oreal purchased the company. They have brought it where the market is today. Introducing their express nail varnish in 1997.

I don’t wear a full face of make-up, I concentrate mainly on my eyes, and on my lips when I am going out.

So it is important to me that my eyes are the most noticeable feature. After all, when talking to someone, you would look them in the eyes, right? Without any eye make-up, my eyes are nothing, I look old (OK, I know I am old, but there’s nothing wrong with trying to hide it), they look like little wee holes in the snow. So when they are made up, they look big, beautiful, I look younger, and most importantly, I feel much better inside (look good, feel good).

My lashes are medium brown, going slightly blond towards the eyelid. They are about medium length, and not especially thick, so I needed a mascara that would lengthen my lashes without clumping the lashes together, and it had to make my lashes look fuller and thicker.

I tried a few different makes, but have finally found the best one for me.

Maybelline Volum’ Express.

It has an exclusive formula featuring a unique volumising complex. It gives my lashes that instant volume without clumping. The brush has 2 lengths of bristles. Short bristles for maximum volume, and long bristles to give an even comb through. No clumping or blobs.

It is ophthalmologically tested, so suitable for contact lens wearers and for people with sensitive eyes.

It comes in a rather fat, 10 ml tube, easy to grip and easy to find amongst my other make-up. I use black, but it also comes in waterproof black, dark brown, waterproof dark brown, and brownish grey. It is available from Boots, Superdrug and most good Supermarkets. The Packaging is a bit poor. But it’s going in the bin, so what does it matter? The price is excellent at £3.99, and it does last me quite a long time. Wearing it 4 days out of 7, it lasts me well over a year. Now that’s a bargain.

Maybelline have an excellent web site, where you can learn the full history of the company, and also see clear crisp pictures of all their products. This is very easy to navigate and is well designed.
