Goa is world famous for its sun , sand and sea. However I would like to bring to your notice Mayem Lake in Bicholim district of North Goa.It is a lake with a mountain in its backdrop giving a picturesque view.Standing by the lake and watching the mountain with the lake at its feet is a sight which soothes the eyes.
If you plan to go to Mayem Lake I would recommend you to take the North Goa tour . The reason for this is that Mayem Lake is out of way from other tourist spots and traveling to Mayem could be expensive and transportation is not always available at all the time .
Mayem Lake is situated near the mining quarries.The soil of the mountain is red in colour. Your bus will give you about an hour’s halt at Mayem lake. The entry fee to Mayem Lake is 2 Rs per person. You can enjoy paddle boating at Mayem Lake. Besides there is a canteen on the lakeside where you can get refreshments , cold drinks and beer.
The charges for paddle boating are about Rs 50 for half hour and Rs 100 for an hour.However be sure you know how to navigate your boat well because I have seen many boats colliding with each other and also with the walls of the lake. Please take care to see that no water birds are hit by your boat.Boats are available for 2 , 4 or 6 people.
Besides boating you can also take a walk in the finely landscaped garden along the lake.This is a very good place for photography hence I would suggest you to take your cameras with you if you visit this lake.Plucking of flowers is not permitted from the garden.
As far as accommodation goes , most of the tourists do not stay near the Mayem lake as it has limited facilities and it is far from other tourist attractions.Besides transportation to and fro from Mayem will be costly .However , if you are a nature lover and prefer calm and serene atmosphere and want to stray from the beaten track, then Mayem lake is for you.Mayem Lake View is a residency run by GTDC which offers accommodation near Mayem Lake.
However my recommendation for you is to visit Mayem lake by the North Goa tour. It is truly a refreshing spot and a novelty apart from the beaches of Goa.
