I see a lot of reviews around maggi, top ramen or some other noodles, they got so popular as they are so easy to make and taste so great . But quite often high levels of sodium, suspect lead or msg and the use of at least some refined flour puts them in the category "junk" .
Everyone barring a few love this kind of junk food and the maggi ban has only brought maggi back this time with a greater force . Now there seems to be a rebound hunger for this food, but I was never particularly happy with it .
Now let me talk about my favorite snacking option- Mccains veggie fingers, thats sweet corn, carrot, peas, mashed potatoes, breadcrumbs all rolled like fingers into a batter of corn starch, rice flakes, corn flour and wheat .
It comes in a frozen form and is ready to heat and eat, the veggie fingers must be baked or deep fried for a few minutes and served hot with ketchup, sauce or chutney especially shezwan .
My suggestion to all is to keep its nutritive value alive, use an air fryer like the ones from philips or just bake it or tava fry it with very little oil . Refined oils are known to be highly toxic and do a lot of free radical damage .
But if you must use fats to fry it, I suggest the use of organic desi ghee or if you are a vegan like me, satures like coconut oil thats virgin and cold press extracted . Any other Filtered but not refined oils, cold pressed extracted will also do good but avoid sunflower and safflower as they are high in omega 6 and low on omega 3s .
The veggie fingers are a very good source of proteins, carbohydrates and packed with nutrition and fiber . I consider this combo extremely healthy and palatable .
It will also have some traces of fats, most of you may not be aware that even corn and rice have some traces of good fats . Wheat and rice also have some proteins too .
Even Dr John Mcdougall who got all too famous for his book the starch solution, for advocating whole plant based foods like, rice, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans, peas, whole grains etc for a healthy happy living, would be proud to advocate this stuff, im confident .
This stuff is completely vegetarian, ready in 3 minutes and is free from cholesterol and transfat . Its stored frozen and can be baked or fried without any thawing .
It comes in a 400 gms packing and is priced at just Rs 105 . we have about 20-25 veggie fingers in one packet and about 5 of them can be served to one person, which means that the packet can serve about 4-5 guys .
In a nutshell if you ask me its a complete food, based on many whole foods and is extremely healthy as well as has a very high satiety index or the ability to keep you feeling full for a long long time being very rich in fiber .
According to Dr John Mcdougall, The starch solution is the way we must eat, he expressed that the obesity epidemic partly stems from the fact that we eat like kings and queens, a lot of rich foods, like dairy based.ice creams, cheese, energy dense pizzas, eggs, meat, dairy products and chocolate . Over indulgence in nuts.
A much simpler diet that many consists of beans, peas, potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice, corn and whole wheat based products or grains is how we can enjoy a life thats leaner and healthier . He also wants us to eat nuts in moderation .
I am sure John wont refuse a serving of Veggie fingers himself, after all thats how he wants us to eat . John feels thats how the Indians, chinese and japanese used to eat about 30 years ago but now since most of us are eating the SAD or the standard american diet a lot, which is so energy dense and nutrient deficient, .we are also turning fat and sick .
I hope you guys have enjoyed this review and many more written previously. I might not appear again, a little demotivated with the passage of time on MS. I hope I have inspired a few of you to eat as much as possible food as it exists in nature- whole and unprocessed . Let thy food be thy medicine .
Cheers!
