MEDANTA: The Dacoit Medicity
My Experience during my father’s treatment.
My father was admitted on Thursday, 21st Feb"2013 for the complaint of Low Saturation and Chest Congestion. We reached there around 12 at midnight in emergency. The first attitude was so depressing. We had to wait for about 15 minutes for shifting from Ambulance to Inspection place. We had provided all Medical Summary and Medicines in the existing phase. They treated him whole night.
In the morning of Friday, they shifted him in the single room under the supervision of Respiratory Team consisting of Dr. Himanshu Garg and Dr. Bornali Dutta. They carried out all the necessary investigation and prescribed the medicine to hospital nursing staff who are totally negligent to their duties and of course non skilled too.
During the time of admission in emergency ward, we had made all declarations subject to which medicines are currently under use. Inspite to all these facts, medicines related to cardiac, which was not our complaint at that time of admission, had been prescribed without cardio consultation. When we figured that out and discussed it with them, the on-duty staff told us that you have liberty to call a cardiologist at your room, if you know one. It means no coordination was there for pleading resulting wrong medicines of cardio lower B.P. 90/60 when we called a cardiologist, he immediately asked the staff to stop 3 medicines out of 6 being given. Now one can understand mental pressure and patient’s condition, as he was totally aware of this episode as my father was in talking condition, able to eat his own food, and neurologically fit at that time. After putting a lot of pressure on nursing staff about wrongful prescription of medicine, they said you’re a problematic customer, which was totally unacceptable at so called ’high reputed’ Medanta. On the night of Friday, the monitor installed at our room was very noisy and was giving fluctuating reading. When we spoke to Dr. Dutta, he said that he knows that this monitor has error, and gives wrong reading, and told us that he will get it changed soon.
This was really a "High Standard Drama".
On the morning of Saturday, Saturation (SPO2) was fluctuating. After considering all the parameters like nebulizing, medicine, ventury mask oxygen at full rate as advised by Dr. Bornali Dutta and Dr. Himanshu Garg. We complained to Doctor’s team during their routine visit to our room. Both the doctors, Dr. Bornali Dutta and Dr. Himanshu Garg, stood near the bed, i.e., other end of patient. Neither of them checked any thing, or asked for any further investigation regarding the fluctuation of Saturation. Just by taking a glance at my father, while reading their newspaper, they said he’ll be OK. As my father’s condition deteriorated day by day, we asked to call the physician Dr. Katariya, the only person in Medanta who behaved like a doctor, and asked to investigate for further treatment. After reporting, Tuberclosis with high range was found.
The day was monday, meaning 5 days were wasted without any output and respiratory team had done only formalities and gave expensive medicine which were neither as per prescription, nor as per requirement, and were non performing. Dr. Bornali Dutta and Dr. Himanshu Garg have not taken any pain for delay of treatment & deteriorated health of my father. Whenever we tried to discuss the matter, he always said that it was due to old age of my father. At the time of admission his Hb (Hemoglobin) was 12.5 . 5 days in treatment, and his Hb fell down to 9.
Is this correct way of treatment?
They immediately asked us to shift him ICU. We questioned them that why we have been shifted in the room from emergency and then 5 days have been wasted just for the sake of their expensive bills. and unsystematic treatment. They told us now it is upto you, and asked us that what is our demand. We told them we want our father to return home in the same condition as he was admitted here, nothing more. Dr. Bornali Dutta & Dr. Himanshu Garg told us that you just allow him in ICU for now, and we will make him fit till evening after the saturation reaches normal condition. Immediately afterwards, they called us in the ICU and told us that for betterment of your father’s health, you have to authorize us to put him on ventilator. We told them in the morning that every thing was normal, except the saturation. Now they told us that the ball is in their court, either we have to sign the acceptance form or allow our father to die. We were left with no option but to do as they asked us to.
Since the morning of Tuesday, as my father was shifted to ICU, the mindset of ICU doctors, Dr. Mukesh and Dr. Chitra, was that my father will not survive, and they kept telling me the same. As the story of Dr. Bornali Dutta & Dr. Himanshu Garg reached on climax, it was evident that the whole ’Respiratory Team’ and ’ICU Team’ was behaving like a racket in a planned manner. If their attitude was so negative, How can they seriously treat my father?
To add to the pain, they restricted our visiting hours to 11:30 to 11:45 am in the morning and 6:30 to 6:45 pm in the evening, so that no one can track their treatment shortcomings.
However, when we raised this issue in the evening to Dr. Trehan, The MD of Medanta, forwarded our complaint to Dr. Mehta and asked us to talk to him. Dr. Mehta was incharge of ICU. However, We feel Dr. Bornali Dutta and Dr. Himanshu Garg are fearless and Besharam (shameless). They did not ask any problem related to my father after his admission to ICU.
My father was declared dead on next Saturday morning.

No nursing,
No administrator, to watch shameless doctors like Bornali Dutta and Himanshu Garg.
Only pomp and show was there. Nothing to do with patients and their attendees.
I’ve just one request to all the readers. Please don’t take your loved ones to Medanta, Gurgaon.
