Working to bring your IM buddies to you absolutely anywhere - this is what you find on the page about us for meebo. A basic description of what meebo is it is just another portal like e-messenger and others which offer common connectivity to many IM servers through a single window - but its a bit more. It has some other features like blogging, voice enabled chatting and moreover, it supports more than 10 languages - both International and Local. Let me start with the most important feature of the site – the IM connectivity. At present, the meebo team offers connectivity to 4 to 6 IM servers. They include the most commonly used Yahoo, Google talk, MSN messenger, ICQ and Jabber.
It is true that all the features advertised were not implemented, but I hope this ambitious team achieves them soon. I work behind a proxy and most of the times, access to the IM servers like YAHOO, MSN and Google are restricted. Then, I googled for portals which use the normal Internet browser to enable web based chatting. I found two portals interesting: e-messenger and meebo – of course, for the first one, name itself says, but for the latter, I got attracted to its strange name. This review is not to say e-messenger is not good, but meebo is fast and reliable on the terms of connectivity compared to e-messenger.
The most confusing (?) yet, good feature of meebo – particularly when you login using two or more IM ids is that the contacts from both the domains are shown in a single window rather than one pop-up per server. Also, I feel the message receipt and delivery are a lot faster than other portals which offer the same service. This may be because the population which uses (or at the least know) this portal is less. The portal is run by a group of six or more people (we can see the faces of six key people on the site), but they are trying their best to make meebo a hit. They are maintaining a forum, where we can log our comments to help them add more features to their service. The team also maintains a blog spot where we can find answers to most of our questions regarding the site.
Well! I did not go thru all the features of meebo, but I use the IM one regularly and I feel it is very useful atleast for the people who want to talk to their buddies on a restricted network connection. Last but not the least, the team is in search of C, C++ professionals for increasing the size of their creative crew.
ADDED ---- Meebo also enables you to store ur IMs just by signing up for Meebo - free account.
P.S. Please rate my review and leave your comments.
