Abstract but very nice experience...

I am a great fan of Tabu the actress. She is one of the best in Bollywood and that is why I was anxious to see this movie. Lo and behold the DVD lands in the India 4 U store in the backwaters of Portland, OR USA! What a great world we live in...

I am not ususally a fan of movies that are abstract and high art. But this movie really touched me in such a way that I do recommend it for those who enjoy a different type of movie.

To me it was about a writer who suffering from writer’s block and not to mention severe lonliness (his sister marries and leaves him alone for the first time) conjures up a beautiful woman to torment him into writing a love story about her. To me Meenaxi never existed in reality, I might be wrong about this, but that is the only way I could make some sense out of this movie.

The writer is not a very likable person, he comes on as a bit vain, and now his metal stability is in question because of his ’’Meenaxi’’ hallucination. Meenaxi (which is really him) never seems to be satisfied with the stories. He is so tormented that he becomes ill and is found dead at the end of the movie by his visiting married sister.

This theme of the artist being tormented and succumbing to illness was reminiscent of the movie ’’Amadeus’’ where Mozart dies in the process of trying to write a funeral requim and this piece also torments him in that movie.

The music and visuals in Meenaxi are just marvelous. The photography so outstanding, so many bright colors. The plot may or may not exist, depending on the viewer, but the scenery is worth it. The actors did a fine job, although I did not like the Meenaxi character, maybe because she was not real and just a manifestation of the writer’s mind, whom I did not really care for too much.

In fact none of the characters in this movie invoked much sympathy or feelings from me individually, but all together, the story had a haunting beauty to it which I am having trouble describing.
