A crippled beast..

When I had to choose between OneplusX and MX5, I choose the later mainly because of the hyped fingerprint feature. I have used this device for nearly 10 months and not so happy with the buy after all.

1) Camera: Even though its megapixel count is huge for a smartphone it lacks image stabilisation and does even worse in low light conditions. IPhone has invested in producing efficient algorithms in designing camera software, which is not the case with MX5. The image processing is a big letdown. Also it can’t focus when the object is less than 30cm.

2) Multitasking/Gaming: While octacore Helios-X10 chip paired with 3GB RAM manages to run the device smoothly, it fails miserably while playing graphic intense games. After 10-15min of play the device breathes fire and I find it very difficult to continue playing.

3) Battery: The 3150mAh cell manages to live up to 1.5-2 days after regular use. The power saving modes are really trustworthy when you’re low on juice.

4) Interface: Flyme on top of android is something where it’s a sure winner. It is highly customisable and looks similar to IOS. Task switching and multi window feature are designed elegantly so that you can operate it with a single hand(if your hanf is big enough to play a 5.5" device).

5) Display: The AMOLED display is not rich in contrast compared to Samsung screens or Oneplus. I tried playing 4K content and it worked seamlessly without any framedrops.

6)  Network: Although it supports 4G it isn’t VoLTE enabled. This is a big disappointment as it has become common thesedays and even some low end phones are VoLTE enabled. There were no issues in WiFi or Bluetooth. Haven’t really tested NFC yet.

7) Memory: Mind that only 11GB of internal 16GB is usable so you are left with a little space after installing some apps. Without SD card support I had to backup my files regularly to prevent it from data clogging.

8) Build: It has a premium metallic finish and well crafted edges. Sim card holder looks cheap. It has an optimised home button with well defined operations.

9) Fingerprint: The sensor is embedded in the home screen button and responds without much lag. However, it finds hard to identify if the finger is oriented vertically.

Verdict: MX5 looks great on paper but fails to do the actual job and doesn’t qualify to be a flagship. You can go for Le-Eco with very similar configurations at half the price of MX5.
