DISCLAIMER: THIS REVIEW IS INSPIRED FROM COOLWATERS LAST WEEK REVIEW OF MY BEST FRIEND WEDDING TITLED AS "SAJAN KI SAHELI".
Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai opens at Gateway of India with Sanjay/Sanju(Uday Chopra) and Ria(Bipasha Basu) discussing why a man and woman can never be friends. Things are going fine until the Sanju receives a call from his childhood best friend Anjali / Anju(Sanjana) about her marriage. Then he realises that he has been in love with Anjali all his life. He packs his bags and sets out for Dehradun to break the marraige.
Sanju starts playing his cards immediately to win the favour of Anjalis large and overtly affectionate khandaan, comprising a Vastu crazy aunt(Bindu), bachelor uncle(Saurabh Shukla), grandmother(Dina Pathak), sister(Tanaaz Currim), and ideal mom-dad(Alok Nath - dunno his wifes name).
Then comes Jimmy Shergill as NRI Rohit. He is handsome & a doctor by profession.
Sanju attempts to tarnish Rohits image in a bachelor party, where Anjali finds her would-be hubby, dancin with the Shamita Shetty(iten no). Then a briefwoh meri hai happens, they decide to keep pursuing Anjali and let her decide who she wants.
Ria arrives on the scene and convinces Sanju to pose as couple in love, to make Anjali jealous.
If you thought Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai was a DESI version of the superhit romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, Dermot Mulroney and Rupert Everett My Best Friends Wedding, think again. ITS A POOR COPY.
While the basic plot derives inspiration from the Hollywood flick, here are a few CONS: the winning over family idea from DDLJ. happy-joint family from HAHK.
Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai borrows too much for its own good. In the original, Julia loses the guy but in our inspired version a hero cant loose. He gets Sanju & this is where I feel they got all wrong.
Uday Chopra, in author backed role(Julia Roberts) has an advantage over the rest of cast. But he fails to impress & his performance than Julias.
Jimmy Shergill as Rohit is an extension of his Karan in Mohabbatein. Hes good but in prev film hangover.
Sanjana(now Tulip) is charming but lacks screen presence.
For director Sanjay Gadhvi, he gave not 1 but 2 blockbusters with YashRaj(Dhoom & D2)
Composer Jeet-Pritam score is quite good, esp tracks like Resham si hai yeh hawaayen and Sharara.
Overall, it was a disappointing film from Yash Raj camp provided that they had funds & a sucessful storyline. Treatment let them & the film down badly!
