Pediatrics Care - An Alert For The Parents

Just want to share a bit of personal experience with the parents of Chennai. We are new to Chennai and live near Miot hospital. For past few days, my daughter was suffering from fever. We took her to Miot OPD, as it was nearby hospital and seems to have good campus infrastructure and brand. The doctor examined her and gave some medicines and also alerted us that she might needed to be hospitalized if situations does not improve within a day.

Things went wrong and she had to get admitted on Friday 22nd Jan. The senior doctor in charge assured us that she will be alright very soon and gave a very long laundry list of tests to be done. The treatment was only high dose antibiotics to get the fever down and nothing else. When the reports of the blood tests came in, the doctor even did not bother to see them.

He asked the nurse a few question in Tamil which we could not understand and did not even look at the reports of the blood tests and USG done. Overall, the fever was under control but she started developing other complications like throat infection, severe cough and stomach pain. The doctor did not bother to visit the patient for whole of Satuday. Upon repeated follow up by her mother, finally the doctor came in around 8 PM and blasted her saying that he was completely informed about the condition of the child and there is no need to do any follow up. He also mentioned that he will not come on Sunday and would not be reachable.

However, if the condition of the baby stabilizes, he will be released on Monday. As promised, the doctor did not show up on Sunday and even till late evening Monday. Around 5PM upon enquiring about the release, the nurse informed me that the doctor has given a nod to release her even without exaimining her since last 48 hours! At that point of time, I was crying to release my baby and treat her properly and I settled the bill. Note that there was a lump sum amount charged in the bill as doctor’s consultancy fee without any break up like number of visit. This kind of break up is provided by even any B category nursing homes.

The releasing advice prescribed continuation of crocin and high dose antibiotics every 8 hours for next 7 days. It is clearly mentioned in the medicine wrapper itself that overdose of these might cause severe damage to kidney and lever. We took her to a good reputed pediatrics immediately and he discarded the entire treatment and medicines and gave a new course of medicines. Since then, she is showing signs of improvement in general health and hopefully she will recover from here now.

I came to know later, that locally Miot is regarded as a worst money vending machine and the treatment here are actually totally misleading at times. I do agree with this and wanted to give a heads up to all the parents before considering Miot as an option for theier kids.

I must mention that the staff nurses are extremely good and they do take care even late in the night but without proper backing of the doctor, it does not help much.

Also I have noticed while settling the dues, they intelligenly avoid feeling up the feedback form though it is difficult to beleive that these things are not known to the management.
