Friendship can make a difference

Mitr - My friend is probably one of the best movies to be considered worth watching after Hyderabad Blues. The movie is of the same essence, The NRI flavour... though the story & style is uniquely different.

Mitr, The first movie directed by Revathy Menon, one of the best and well known south indian actress in yester years & produced by George Pius Tharayil brings in life the importance of relationship between a mother and a daughter (son)...

The story revolves around Lakshmi (played by Shobana) and her husband Prithvi (played by Nasir Abdullah)along with their daughter Divya (Preeti Vissa).

The family has been in the US for 18 long years or so and Prithvi is absorbed in his career/job. Their 17 year old daughter Divya is caught in between the life of youngsters in US and as usual with a strict Indian mother who is culturally traditional. Prithvi at the sametime is a changed man and feels fine with his daughters’ attitude.

As things go on, one leads to another and on a fine day Divya decides to way away from home. At the same time Prithvi adds more to the topic and lets Lakshmi down.

lakshmi being frustrated and all alone feels that she was taken for granted till the day. All out of blues she decides to sit on an Internet chatroom and comes across a sincere friend (Mitr) who does have problems to deal with. They decide to chat to eachother and unburden themselves of all the feelings. Annonimity is maintained though Lakshmi considers the Mitr to be a man. The Mitr makes her understand and advices her on certain things and its then Lakshmi rediscovers herself.

I wouldn’t really be writing anymore as its important to watch the movie. Its appealing and the situation is sincere asking people to relate themselves to the situation. There are touches of Humour too in it but its all easily predictable.

Nasir & Shobana have done their roles exceptionally well. Shobana is probably one of the best and expresses herself quite well. Nasir is not bad at all... Cant expect him to do anything more... He is admiriable. One positive side of the movie is there is no song or dance sequence... which makes the movie continue without any disturbance while the background music by Bhavatharini (IllayaRaja’s Daughter)is astonishing.

Not sure if its acidentally or incidentally, the movie has an all women backup. Starting from the director to screen play and costumes to music... Its all backed up by women. Its awesome to find such creativity and I wish them all a very goodluck on any such future projects.

The movie is worth a watch and basically explains the situation of Indian parents in the US.

The move is appealing, honest and gets you absorbed. Give it a try and you might watch it for the second time.
