I like Raveen Tandon, she has almost as many charms as our legendary Hema Malini, Tanuja, Babita, Sadhna, Nargis.
Usually Raveena Tandon is cast in a film for her songs and dance and a few romantic dialogues
here and there. But MOHRA has Raveena doing the biggest role of all, Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty
were small actors those days, she was the one who was leading the market. Before this film Raveena had good run with her debut and she had good reviews from the market
Raveena Tandon is a investigative reporter for a newspaper, this paper is run by a blind man
Mr.Jindal, her immediate editor boss is Younus Pervez(Mr.Siddiqi) I liked MOHRA, my first
reason is RAVEENA TANDON, other reason is she got more screen time in this film than Naseeruddin Shah, Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty. Her role is binding all characters of this movie, even her dresses were special in this movie. It seemed like S.Mukherjee the designer did the job. Raveena if calculated in minutes, she received more reels to her time.
Raveena looked competent in the role of a journalist and she looked charming, she looked good as a love stuck girl, she looked good in the role of a crusader to get release of VISHAL(Sunil)
Mohra movie has become synonymous with the song TU CHEEZ BADI HAI MAST MAST. This song looked good on RAVEENA, all 5 songs in mohra are good and memorable.
Raveena made Akshay Kumar looked like a impressive inspector, Sunil Shetty looked a wronged
man and specially she made Naseeruddin Shah looked sinister, I must say her later films did
injustice to her, she was typecasted in a semi-comedic superfluous girl roles, a mention must
be made for Raza Murad makeup in this film was awesome. He looked scary and true villain.
Naseeruddin Shah is a scene stealer in all his films be it IQBAL or MOHRA, he is good, but the
story writers of MOHRA give his role too many twists and turns. You can say he is the mover and the reason for all other characters of this film. One time he is Jindal, shown heading a body of JURY and presiding over pardon hearing of VISHAL. Another time he is shown making deal like a common drug dealer, yet another time he looked like a teenager , who has been jilted by his lady love. I don’t think Indian Constitution allows a blind news paper owner to arbitrate pardon hearings.
Mention must be made for Paresh Rawal, who did a semi-comedic role of a assistant police inspector, his comedy streak started from MOHRA, now is very famous for his comic/serious
roles, like Hulchul.
Even with so many glaring loose ends. Jindal looked a serious dangerous person, Vishal(sunil
shetty) looked quiet well built and a serious family man. Akshay looked a son, a bad leader
to junior police officers and hot headed. Akshays assistant is seen consorting with bad guys
and taking bribes from drug dealers, no officer will tolerate such assistants.
Akshay Kumars mother looked younger than him, Sadashiv Amrapukar was wasted in his role of a
police commissioner, he is a powerful actor, his full thrust was never required in this movie
Kulbhushan Kharbanda looked liked a under paid side actor, these 2 veteran actors can carry
any films burden on their shoulders, they were given dull roles and left unexploited.
My purpose in highlighting so many mistakes in casting and story is to tell you, in spite of all
these weak links, this film did good business and it is always a good watch, I enjoy it even
today, it gets retained in your memory, probably because Raveena looked ravishing.
Raveen Tandon was a easy going, carefree person, wherever she was, as a ambassador to UNICEF or on the screen, she never went out on all steam to do a role, she simply glides along from a frame to the next. Some people have a nice spirit in them, this spirit transcends into the
work they do, that works comes out looking good and successful.
